Mahal

The ancient Persian Mahal rugs made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are among the most desired rugs in Persian villages by both specialists and interior designers. Mahal rugs are icons of Persian popular art and have a sophisticated and highly decorative aesthetic. As a result, the finest antique Mahal rugs have become very difficult to find on the international market.

Mahal carpets designs are semi-geometric, with either medallion or allover patterns. Mahals are influenced by Sultanabad styles but have more motifs throughout the carpet.

The best Mahal-style rugs have variations on classic Persian patterns, such as herati (diamonds with wavy leaves), mina khani (flower) and harshang (dragon and flower), often in pastel and sand tones. Many contain these geometric patterns scattered throughout the area of the rug while others feature an open field with central medallion shape, also often found in other styles of Persian rugs.

Mahal rugs were made by Persian families within the Mahal and surrounding villages in northwestern Persia. The fabric used has a looser knot and the wool is thick, similar to nomadic rugs. However, Mahal rugs today receive the same consideration given to Persian rugs Farahan and Mahajiran Sarouk, both highly respected for their finesse.

An even more exclusive class of Mahal rugs, known as “Ivory Mahal”, has the center field in colors between ivory and beige. These Mahal rugs are among the most desired antique rugs on the international market and rightfully so, as the visual impact between the designed motifs and the central area of the pastel-colored rug is often unparalleled.

“Ivory Mahal” Persian rugs often boast charming simplicity, along with the use of undyed sheep’s wool, in shades of ivory, cream and beige. Often with latticework of vines and flowers in soft pastel tones, they feature wonderful bands in the same color but in different shades known as abrash that provide the visual effect of depth. Rarer to be found, they have designs that cover the entire area of the rug with flowers of exaggerated sizes, arranged asymmetrically in a sparsely adorned field.

However, there are those who prefer Mahals that feature a more casual design and draw attention for their abundant creativity and folksy charm. They have abstract tribal motifs and traditional designs that reflect the gardens of the Persian court.

Ancient Mahal rugs are preferred by many for their originality and artistry and have created an important niche in today’s decorative market for their compatibility with interiors and versatility. Due to their rarity, convenience and innovative spirit, the finest antique Mahal rugs from the 19th and turn of the 20th century will continue to grow as an investment in art for many decades to come.
