Yuruk rugs, more than any other type, exemplify the great nomadic tradition of Turkish rug weaving (Yuruk means nomad in Turkish). Yuruk were produced in Eastern Anatolia, so they sometimes appear closely related to rugs from the Caucasus area. But for the most part, Yuruk rugs derive from much earlier Turkish weavings further west, such as those of Bergama and Oushak. The ancient Turkish Yuruk carpet repertoire is abstract and geometric like the oldest Turkish carpets. They rarely use floral elements, and even then, only in the most stylized form. Later pieces tend to be dark and purplish. Richer and more varied colors indicate the antiquity of the rug.
