Zanjan

A small city located in northwest Persia between Tehran and Tabriz with Azeri Turkish population. Carpets generally feature a medallion, usually in a hexagonal shape, located in the center and extending to the upper and lower parts of the carpet. Other designs such as flowers, stars, stylized rhombuses with hooks on the edges and animals can also be found. Due to the proximity to other production centers such as Bidjar and Hamadan, it is common for Zanjan rugs to be inspired by the designs of rugs made in these locations. The base and pile of ancient Zanjan rugs are made of wool and knotted symmetrically. But, from the middle of the 20th century, artists started to make the base with cotton. Colors include red, blue and ivory in both the main area and the larger edge of the rug. The elements that make up the design are usually made in different shades of blue, brown, green, gray and beige. These same colors are used in the contours and smaller borders.
