The tradition of Seichour rugs from Kuba features a variety of visual formats, the most emblematic design being the compressed cross of Saint Andrew. In this rug, a series of this motif is lined up among the stylized floral designs called ispigyulchichi or “white flower”. Each cruciform icon is connected to others partially visible in the ivory field, representing the elaborate and infinite network of crosses from the artist’s mind. The inherent intensity of this Seichur creates energy and curiosity for the observer, as well as the profoundly saturated primary colour tones used throughout the composition.
