The range is wide because each rug is a unique piece, and the price depends on where and when it was woven, how fine the work is, its condition and how rare it is. In practice: a smaller tribal piece runs from around US$ 1,200 to 2,400; a fine rug of good origin and a good size, between US$ 8,000 and US$ 24,000; and collector’s examples pass US$ 30,000. Below you will see what lies behind that number.

What determines the price of a Persian rug

Origin. Each city and region has its own tradition and reputation. A fine Kerman or Kashan is worth more than a simpler village piece, even at the same size.

Age. Rugs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, woven before large-scale production, are the most prized. The older and better preserved, the higher the value.

Knot density. The more knots per square centimetre, the finer the design and the more hours of work behind the piece. It is one of the factors that weigh most on the price.

Condition. Vivid colours, original fringes and edges and few repairs raise the value. A rug well cared for over generations is worth more than a worn one.

Rarity. Unusual designs, specific natural dyes, the hand of a master weaver and hard-to-find sizes push the price up.

If you would like to go deeper, we have written in detail about how rug values are determined.

The price ranges in practice

Entry — up to US$ 3,000. Smaller pieces of simpler origin, excellent for anyone starting to collect. This is where some smaller Tabriz and a Malayer from the north-west come in.

Mid-range — from US$ 3,000 to US$ 16,000. Rugs of a good size and recognised origin, with a more elaborate design. Here you find pieces such as a Lori from the west or an Afshar from the south.

Collector — above US$ 16,000. The finest and rarest rugs, of exceptional manufacture. This is the range of a Kerman Lavar, a Mohtasham Kashan or a Bidjar, which can reach US$ 65,000. On the contrary: these are handmade pieces, increasingly rare, that have already crossed a century and tend to hold and even grow in value over time. And there is everyday use, which counts too: a good rug stays with a home for decades, passes from one generation to the next and rarely goes out of fashion. What protects that value is provenance — knowing the piece is genuine, with its origin and age confirmed.

Talk to us

If you would like help understanding the value of a specific piece, or finding a rug within your budget, just get in touch.
