Kazak – Central Caucasus

Singular mastery and a masterful palette give this Kazak from the highest Caucasus a striking presence — beginning with its ground of bluish aqua-green, a tone rarely found in Caucasian weaving. Upon it, designs passed down through generations of carpet-making families orbit the emblematic triad: three hooked medallions holding the centre, interspersed with framed, flowered diamonds and the ancient stylized sun-symbols. Inside and outside the medallions, flowers of every kind populate the field, while the main border parades a row of roses punctuated by quartets of tiny blossoms. A rug of inherited memory, worn like a family name.

The aqua-green field is an uncommon colour for the category and, together with the room size and full pile, sets the piece apart among examples of the period.
