A Caucasian Chan-Karabagh from the end of the 19th century, in a predominantly light blue rarely granted so much room to breathe. Across the field, rows of colourful botéhs hang each from its little handle — and, with village wit, the handles change direction from one row to the next, so the teardrops seem to sway alternately left and right, like a crowd dancing. Bright diamonds punctuate the intervals, and an ivory border of grand running hooks in blue and walnut frames the merriment. Karabagh at its most charming: rigorous craft, playful spirit.
