Karabagh – South Caucasus

This cheerful and jovial Karabagh features a design of great tradition in the southern Caucasus. Upon a field of deep charcoal, large stepped medallions bloom in raspberry, coral and tangerine, edged with the latch-hooks that are the signature of Caucasian village weaving. The near-black ground intensifies every colour set against it, giving the rug the festive glow of folk art at its most confident. Generations of Karabagh weavers drew these same forms from memory, each adding her own accent; here the drawing is bold, the spirit unmistakably joyful.
