Agra – China

Woven in China in the 1940s, this palatial carpet pays homage to the celebrated Agra design of northern India, reinterpreted with remarkable finesse. Against a field of warm gold, a majestic border of deep indigo unfolds, populated by grand palmettes in blush rose, ivory and soft jade, linked by gracefully flowering vines. Two guard borders in champagne tones, traced with a scrolling floral meander, frame the composition and lead the eye inward. The palette — saffron, indigo, rose and celadon — achieves the serene equilibrium that made Agra carpets favourites of palaces and grand residences. With its monumental dimensions and gentle patina, this piece brings to a contemporary interior the quiet grandeur of two great weaving traditions: Indian by design, Chinese by hand.
