Afshar – Southern Persia

A rug that transmits exuberant joy. Across its ivory field, this large Afshar aligns rows of latch-hooked diamond medallions in madder red and indigo, each filled with small blossoms and tribal figures, marching in a rhythm as regular as a festival drum. The deep navy border, strewn with rosettes, contains the celebration without dimming it. Afshar weavers of southern Persia were masters of this effect — light ground, saturated ornament, geometry with a heartbeat. Woven in soft, lustrous wool, it is a piece that makes a room smile.
