Armenian Kazak – Central Caucasus

A unique rug, unlike the classic Caucasians. Seven rows of colourful geometric figures — serrated squares with diamonds at their hearts — cross the navy-blue field, each row carried upon supporting ranks of red arrows, while gentle abrash moves through the ground like a current. The main border is no less inventive: concentric S-shaped lozenges alternate with their inverted mirror images, encircling the whole. Armenian weavers of the central Caucasus signed their independence in exactly this way — taking the shared vocabulary of the region and speaking it with an accent all their own.
