This elegant Persian Beluche, handmade in the 1940s, is an essay in restraint. Across a somber aubergine-brown ground, an allover lattice of chevrons and zigzags advances in quiet gradations of indigo blue, purple, wine and lilac — solid geometric colour laid against solid colour, with no flourish to interrupt the rhythm. An ivory border of small geometric stars frames the composition like moonlight at the edge of a dark field. It is precisely this economy of means that gives the rug its sophistication: seen from across a room it reads as texture; up close, it reveals the disciplined complexity of tribal weaving at its most refined.
