Seraband – West Central Persia

Sparkling wool and vivid natural dyes give this 120-year-old Persian gallery Seraband its vibrant presence. The red field carries the region’s signature: serried rows of botéh — the “seed of life” — repeating in a linear rhythm among small figures, thousands of teardrops marching in quiet order. Of its many borders, the principal ones are woven in ivory with the traditional flowers interspersed between sinuous vines. Across the expanse, gentle abrash varies the shades of red, adding movement and liveliness to the surface. An extraordinary antique gallery: discipline in the design, poetry in the dye pot.
