It comes from north-west Persia, from the region around the town of Heriz, north-east of Tabriz, and it has a look all its own: a large geometric medallion of angular lines at the centre, over a field of terracotta and brick-red, with deep blues and ivory. It is what the oldest and finest Heriz rugs are called, generally from the late nineteenth century, with a more open, spacious design and a softer palette.
