The Heriz is one of the most sought-after antique Persian rugs for decorating, and it is easy to see why. It comes from north-west Persia, from the region around the town of Heriz, north-east of Tabriz, and it has a look all its own: a large geometric medallion of angular lines at the centre, over a field of terracotta and brick-red, with deep blues and ivory. It is a bold drawing, more straight-lined and graphic than the floral Persians, and it works just as well in a classic room as in a modern one. Add to that the hard-wearing wool of the region, which makes the Heriz a robust rug, made for everyday use and to last for generations. Many were woven in large, room-sized formats, which helped make them so popular.

Serapi: the finer Heriz

Within the Heriz family there is a name collectors look for: the Serapi. It is what the oldest and finest Heriz rugs are called, generally from the late nineteenth century, with a more open, spacious design and a softer palette. They are pieces of another level, treated as collector’s rugs. The collection includes examples such as a Serapi from north-west Persia, and you will find other pieces of that calibre on the antique oriental collector rugs page.

The Heriz in decoration

Few rugs give as much to a living room as a Heriz. The warm palette heats the space, the geometric design gives character without weighing things down, and the hard-wearing wool stands up well to the busier areas. It works under a coffee table, anchoring the seating area, or under a dining table. If you are putting a room together, it is worth looking at our antique rugs for the living room page.
