Antique Rugs for the Living Room

An antique rug is usually the piece that pulls a living room together: it marks out the seating area, warms the floor and brings colour and history into the room. The right size

The simplest rule is that the rug has to be large enough to take, at the very least, the front legs of the sofas and armchairs. In a large room, the ideal is for all the furniture to sit on it, with a good margin of floor showing around it, some 20 to 40 cm up to the wall. A rug that is too small, marooned in the middle of the room, leaves everything disconnected. When in doubt between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the better choice. The colours that go together

Antique rugs are more versatile than they look. The tones come from natural dyes, so even the strong reds and blues have a depth that sits well with almost any decoration, from classic to modern. Two approaches work well: use the rug as the starting point, pulling one or two of its colours into the cushions and the objects; or let it be the point of colour in a room with a neutral base. Ivory or beige grounds lighten the room, while red or blue grounds give warmth and presence.

The style: Persian or Caucasian

Each family has its own character. Persian rugs, with their floral designs and medallions, have a more elegant, classic air, and go well with restrained rooms and wooden furniture. The Caucasian ones, geometric in design and strong in colour, have a more graphic side that looks excellent in relaxed or rustic settings.
