This Yerevan rug shares the Gabistan design of the Shirvan rugs of Maraza, Azerbaijan — a testimony to how freely patterns travelled among the weaving villages of the Caucasus. Over an indigo field, ordered rows of stylized devices advance with quiet regularity, while the main border, densely sown with miniature floral repeats on madder red, wraps the composition in warmth; slender olive-green guards complete the frame. Armenian weavers brought to the Caucasian repertoire a particular finesse of drawing, evident here in the precision of every small figure. A dignified, richly detailed piece from the southern-central Caucasus.
