A magnificent Caucasian Shirvan from the end of the 19th century, in excellent condition. From the sky-blue ground rises the central medallion — a great stepped hexagon in ivory crowned with a star — framed by a coral-red surround: striking colour, powerful symbolism, and yet a wealth of subtle detail that rewards the closer look, from the tiny rosettes to the X-figures patrolling the borders. It is this double register — bold from across the room, intricate at arm’s length — that distinguishes the best Shirvans. Innovative and sophisticated in its day; still so in ours.
