An antique rug is usually the piece that organises the whole living room: it marks out the seating area, warms the floor and brings colour and history to the space. The Right Size

The simplest rule is that the rug has to be large enough to take, at the very least, the front legs of the sofas and armchairs. In a large room, ideally all the furniture sits on it, with a good margin of floor showing around it, some 20 to 40 cm up to the wall. A rug that is too small in the middle of the room leaves everything disconnected. When in doubt between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the better choice. The Colours That Work Together

Antique rugs are more versatile than they seem. The tones come from natural dyes, so even the strong reds and blues have a depth that speaks to almost any decoration, from classic to modern. Two approaches work well: using the rug as the starting point, drawing one or two of its colours into the cushions and the objects; or letting it be the point of colour in a neutral room. Pieces with an ivory or beige ground lighten the space, while pieces with a red or blue ground bring warmth and presence.

The Style: Persian or Caucasian

Each family has its own character. Persian rugs, with their floral designs and medallions, have a more elegant, classic air, and go well with restrained rooms and wooden furniture. Caucasian rugs, with geometric designs and strong colours, have a more graphic side that looks wonderful in pared-back or more modern spaces.
