They are village rugs, woven by hand in wool, with geometric designs and strong colours that catch the eye from a distance: vivid reds, deep blues, ivory. The Main Types of Caucasian Rug
Kazak
These are the best known of the Caucasus: large geometric designs, striking medallions and a thick, lustrous wool, with strong reds and blues. They come from the mountainous region between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Among the most sought-after subtypes is the Sewan, recognisable by its large shield-shaped medallion. Kazak guide
Shirvan
From the south-east of the Caucasus, these are finer and more detailed than the Kazak. They carry small geometric patterns that cover the whole field, often with repeated motifs, and they also appear as prayer rugs. It is the most refined of the Caucasians. Shirvan guide
Karabagh
From the southern Caucasus, these combine Caucasian geometric strength with a floral touch of Persian influence. It is the family behind some of the most famous designs in the region, such as the Eagle Kazak itself and the Chelaberd, and they usually have grounds in intense red. Karabagh guide
Gendje
From the Gendje area, these tend to be longer and narrower, with diagonal bands and motifs that repeat along the rug. They have a looser, livelier air. Gendje guide
