The Heriz is one of the most sought-after antique Persian rugs for decorating, and it is easy to see why. It comes from north-west Persia, from the region around the town of Heriz, north-east of Tabriz, and it has a style all of its own: a large geometric medallion of angular lines at the centre, over a field in shades of terracotta and brick red, with deep blues and ivory. It is a bold design, straighter and more graphic than that of the floral Persians, and it works as well in a classic room as in a modern one. Add to that the hard-wearing wool of the region, which makes the Heriz a robust rug, made for everyday use and to last for generations. Many were woven in large, room-size formats, which helped make them so popular.
