The Kazak is the best known of the Caucasian rugs, and one of the easiest to recognise. It comes from the mountainous region of the southern Caucasus, between Armenia and Azerbaijan, where it was woven by hand in the villages, on home looms. What defines a Kazak is the combination of a bold geometric design, striking medallions and a thick, lustrous wool, with strong reds and blues over grounds that often lean towards ivory. These are rugs with presence, made to last and to be seen from across the room. Since each one came off the loom without a cartoon to follow to the letter, no two are alike, and much of their charm lies precisely in those small variations.

How to recognise a good Kazak
A few names help place the pieces. The Sewan Kazak is recognisable by the large shield-shaped medallion that fills almost the whole field. The Lori Pambak has a broad central medallion with strong outlines. And the Fachralo often appears as a prayer rug, with a medallion over an open ground. In all of them, what you look for is good-quality wool, with lustre and a soft handle, colours drawn from natural dyes (with the shifts in tone that bring the piece to life) and a design that is well resolved and confident, drawn without hesitation. With its geometric design and strong colours, the Kazak has a graphic quality that works very well in pared-back, more modern interiors, and it warms up rooms built on a neutral base.
