Antique Runner Rugs for Hallways and Entryways

The hallway takes more footsteps than any other part of the house and gets the least attention. It is also where an antique runner does the most work: it breaks up the emptiness of a narrow space, draws the eye to the far end, and gives the passage the same warmth as the rooms it connects.

Getting the size right

The rule is simple and holds in almost any house: leave 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side of the runner. A rug that touches both walls makes the corridor look narrower than it is; a rug with floor showing along the sides does the opposite, and the corridor gains width.

For length, the best result comes when the runner covers most of the stretch and leaves a breath at both ends. It does not have to be exact: a slightly short piece, centred, looks better than one stretched from door to door.

If the corridor runs beyond six metres, consider two runners in sequence, with a gap of bare floor between them, instead of a single piece. Two rugs from neighbouring origins sit well together without looking like a repeat.

Why an old piece stands up to hallway traffic

It seems counterintuitive to put a hundred-year-old rug in the busiest part of the house. It is the opposite: the antique runner is precisely the one that was made for this. It was woven by hand, knot by knot, in mountain sheep wool, and it had already crossed generations of use before it reached us. A new machine-made rug starts out perfect and gets worse; an old rug has already found its point.

And there is a difference you only notice with time: when a factory rug wears, it looks damaged. When an antique piece wears, it looks lived in. The sheen of the wool softens and the natural dyes lighten without losing the relation between the colours.

The entrance hall

The hall holds the first rug a visitor sees, and usually the only one seen close up and standing. It is the place for a bolder drawing, a Kazak with large geometric figures for instance, because it is read in a few seconds and from above.

Two cautions in use: keep the piece clear of the swing of a door that opens inwards, and prefer designs with a darker ground or a dense pattern, which live better with street dust.
